5S methodology

5S is defined as a methodology that results in a clean, uncluttered, safe and well-organized workplace that helps reduce waste and optimize productivity. It is designed to help build a quality work environment both physically and mentally. The 5S philosophy applies in any work area suitable for visual inspection and lean manufacturing. The condition of the 5S workspace is critical to employees and is the basis of the first impression of customers.

The 5S quality tool is derived from five Japanese terms beginning with the letter “S” that are used to create a workplace suitable for visual inspection and lean manufacturing.

The 5S pillars are easy to learn and important to implement:

Seiri: Separate necessary tools, parts and instructions from unnecessary materials and remove unnecessary ones.
Seiton: To clearly organize and identify parts and tools for ease of use.
Seiso: To undertake a cleaning campaign.
Seiketsu: To perform seiri, seiton and seiso daily to keep the workplace in perfect condition.
Shitsuke: Make it a habit to always follow the first four S’s.
